Why birds? Bussler says “I returned to my outdoor documentary filmmaking days with Birds: A Photographic Expedition, except this time with a book in mind instead of a two-hour film. The big difference between filming birds and filming charging horses is that there’s very little chance that I will get trampled by birds.

Horses, however, are very large and you tend to know where they are. Birds, on the hand, like to hide in the trees. This adds a new and exciting element to filmmaking (even though I’m not making a film.) I approached this project in the same way with the same terminology.”

Bussler is the writer of more than 70 books and the cover designer of 300 more. He is an experienced filmmaker, photographer, and writer who produced and directed the films Horses of GettysburgWestinghouse, and Expo Magic of the White City. Bussler is the writer of 1915 San Francisco World’s Fair in Color: Grandeur of the Panama-Pacific Exposition, 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair: The Louisiana Purchase Exposition in Photographs, and The World’s Fair of 1893 Ultra Massive Photographic Adventure Trilogy.
