French poet, writer, and fabulist Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) is famous for his fables that provide laughter, moral guidance, and life lessons. This rare collection of his work printed in the 1870s is embellished with the brilliant comical engravings of renowned French artist, Gustave Doré (1832-1883.)
La Fontaine’s Fables features some of Doré’s most outrageous and humorous work. His drawings that highlight the look and feel of La Fontaine’s writing are vastly different from his macabre illustrations for Dante’s Inferno and Paradise Lost. His clever depictions of anthropomorphic animals in silly situations are charming, delightful, and technically brilliant. Fans of his lighthearted work for Droll Stories and Don Quixote will love La Fontaine’s Fables.
